Description

Cataloged as VDDR-020, this 2019 Jefferson Nickel exhibits light spread to the southwest, producing an extra bottom edge of the triangular pediment above Monticello's portico on the reverse. The pediment — the classical triangular gable crowning the building's columned entrance — is a prominent geometric element on Felix Schlag's Monticello design, and its straight diagonal lines readily reveal even subtle hub displacement. Light-spread doubling creates a narrow secondary outline that closely follows the original pediment edge, requiring careful examination under magnification to distinguish from die deterioration or strike doubling. Confirmed at Early Die State (Stage A), the southwest direction of spread pushes the secondary image both downward and to the left, an angular displacement consistent with a hub that was slightly rotated or shifted diagonally during the die impression. The VDDR prefix indicates this variety awaits formal UVC/DMR code assignment.
