Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista on the 2019 Jefferson Nickel, VDDR-011 displays medium spread directed east that manifests as an extra left top central doorway on the Monticello reverse — effectively creating a ghost image of the architectural doorway displaced eastward from the primary impression. This type of visible architectural doubling is easy to see on Jefferson Nickels because the geometric regularity of doors and windows makes any secondary impression immediately apparent to the trained eye. Three die stages are documented under die marker codes that remain provisionally assigned (UVC-???? and DMR-00?), indicating the variety awaits final catalog numbering. Stage A represents Early Die State, unconfirmed. Stage B shows the reverse in Early-to-Mid Die State with a die gouge developing in the upper first U of PLURIBUS, accompanied by an obverse also in EMDS condition. Stage C corresponds to Late Die State, also unconfirmed. The 2019-P Jefferson Nickel was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-nickel alloy (75% Cu, 25% Ni) at 5.0 grams and 21.2 mm diameter. The Return to Monticello reverse, featuring the redesigned building facade introduced in 2006, provides the architectural context for this variety's distinctive doorway doubling. Collectors seeking Stage B specimens should look for the die gouge in the U of PLURIBUS as the primary die state confirmation marker.
