Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista, the 2019 VDDR-009 displays light spread to the south visible as an extra top central doorway roof on Monticello's facade. The Jefferson nickel reverse, modified since 2006 when Jamie Franki restored Felix Schlag's original portrait design, retains the detailed Monticello depiction that makes architectural doubling particularly evident. This variety was confirmed at Early Die State on both the reverse and obverse. Doubled die reverse varieties on modern Jefferson nickels are collected avidly because the Monticello building's fine architectural lines — columns, doorways, and rooflines — readily betray even subtle hub misalignment. The extra roof line on the central doorway serves as the primary diagnostic, distinguishable from die deterioration doubling by its consistent spread direction and sharp secondary image.
