2019 (P) Jefferson Nickel - Doubled Die Reverse VDDR-008

Description

A VarietyVista-cataloged doubled die reverse on the 2019 Jefferson Nickel, this variety displays medium southward spread creating an extra top on the left central doorway roof of Monticello. Die markers carry provisional designations UVC-???? and DMR-00?, indicating final catalog numbers had not been assigned at the time of documentation. Three stages have been recorded: Stage A shows both reverse and obverse in early die state, with mid-die and late die states unconfirmed. The southward spread direction is significant — most Monticello doubled dies show lateral or tilted displacement, making a pure southward spread somewhat less common. This directional difference indicates a distinct misalignment during the hubbing process where the second hub impression was displaced downward relative to the first. The left central doorway roof element on Monticello provides a horizontal reference line that clearly reveals vertical displacement, as the doubled image creates what appears to be a second roofline below the primary one. The 2019 Jefferson Nickel was part of the Return to Monticello series that resumed the original Felix Schlag reverse in 2006. Eight VDDR entries from VarietyVista complement the separately numbered Wexler WDDR designations for the same date, reflecting parallel cataloging efforts by different attribution organizations.
