Description

Jeff Stanley discovered this 2019 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel variety exhibiting Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling below the upper portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello — Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate that has appeared on the nickel's reverse since 1938, with a five-year hiatus for the Westward Journey series. The center door area concentrates the tilted hub effect where the doorframe's horizontal and vertical lines provide sharp reference edges against which the secondary impression becomes legible under magnification. A die dot near the semicircular window and a die gouge above the E of STATES serve as diagnostic markers for this specific die. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 2019-P WDDR-025, the variety's position as the twenty-fifth cataloged DDR for 2019 Philadelphia nickels reflects the prolific output of Jefferson Nickel variety research, where the Monticello reverse's detailed architectural rendering continues to yield new discoveries year after year.
