Description

Class VIII tilted hub doubling visible below the upper portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello characterizes this sixteenth doubled die reverse for the 2019 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel. Attributed by Brian Sims under Wexler Variety ID 2019-P WDDR-016, Class VIII doubling results from a slight angular tilt of the hub relative to the die during hubbing, producing a rotational spread that concentrates in architectural details of the building design. The Monticello center doorway is a frequent location for detectable doubling because the straight horizontal and vertical lines of the door frame provide clear reference points against which even minor displacement becomes evident. Die markers include a die dot in the field below the UR of PLURIBUS and another die dot to the upper right of the dome on the reverse, with no notable obverse markers. Sixteen documented doubled die reverses for a single year and mint demonstrates the productivity of modern die variety research on Jefferson Nickels, a series that has been continuously produced since 1938. The 2019-P Jefferson Nickel belongs to the Return to Monticello design period that began in 2006, restoring Felix Schlag's original Monticello reverse after the 2004-2005 Westward Journey commemorative designs.
