Description

Discovered by William Valentine, this 2019-P Jefferson Nickel doubled die reverse exhibits Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling below the upper portion of the door frame on Monticello's center door above the steps. The tilted hub mechanism creates displacement that is typically strongest on one side of the design, and on this variety the center door area captures the most pronounced effect. Obverse die markers include a die crack running through Jefferson's hair to the right of his nose, accompanied by a long die scratch extending through the field from his hair on the right side of his face. On the reverse, a small die gouge sits to the lower right of the M of MONTICELLO. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 2019-P WDDR-014, this Philadelphia-mint regular strike belongs to a prolific year for Jefferson Nickel doubled die reverses, as the Monticello center door frame has proven consistently sensitive to tilted hub displacement across many 2019 die pairs.
