Description

Credited to Elyjah Vasquez and cataloged as Wexler Variety ID: 2019-P WDDR-009, this Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel reverse carries Class VIII tilted hub doubling. The displacement appears below the upper right portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello — a location consistent with the asymmetric spread of tilted hub varieties. Class VIII doubling occurs when the hub contacts the die at a slight angle rather than perfectly parallel, producing a displacement gradient strongest at the point of maximum tilt divergence. Felix Schlag's Monticello facade offers fine architectural detail — doors, windows, columns, and entablature — that serves as a sensitive detector for subtle hub misalignment. The 2019 Philadelphia nickel demonstrates that modern single-squeeze hubbing technology, while far more precise than the multi-impression methods of earlier decades, does not entirely eliminate hub doubling. The discoverer credit reflects the ongoing participation of individual collectors in expanding the die variety census, contributing findings that the broader numismatic community can study and verify.
