2019 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-008

Description

Classified as Class VIII tilted hub doubling, WDDR-008 on the 2019-P Jefferson Nickel (Wexler catalog 2019-P WDDR-008) shows pronounced doubling below the upper right portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello — a localized but visually distinctive manifestation of the tilted hub mechanism. Jeff Stanley documented this variety. Class VIII tilted hub doubling creates a displacement pattern that varies across the die face according to distance from the tilt axis, and the concentration of visible doubling on the center door frame's upper right portion indicates this area fell at a position of significant angular displacement from the hub's tilt point. Die markers on both surfaces provide independent confirmation: the obverse carries a die dot on Jefferson's cheek, while the reverse shows a small die gouge to the upper right of the first L of MONTICELLO and a small die gouge to the upper left of the left long window. These three die-specific markers — the cheek dot and the two reverse gouges — fingerprint this particular working die and distinguish WDDR-008 from the seven preceding entries in the 2019-P DDR catalog. Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse, depicting Thomas Jefferson's Virginia plantation house, has served the Jefferson Nickel series since 1938, and the building's symmetrical architecture with its distinctive portico, columns, dome, and flanking wings provides precise geometric reference lines where tilted hub doubling can be measured and described with specificity. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in standard copper-nickel composition (75% copper, 25% nickel, 5.00 grams, 21.21 mm diameter), this nickel's center doorframe doubling is visible at 7x to 10x magnification.
