2019 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-005
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista as DDR-005 with UVC-1869 and DMR-006, this 2019 Jefferson Nickel doubled die reverse from the Return to Monticello series shows a medium spread from a strong hubbing, manifesting as an extra top on the right central doorway roof of Monticello. This specific diagnostic — a shadow or secondary roof line above the doorway — provides an excellent pick-up point because architectural details on the Monticello reverse offer clean geometric reference lines against which any offset is immediately apparent. Three die stages are documented: Stage A in EDS (Early Die State) remains unconfirmed; Stage B in MDS (Mid Die State) displays die gouges under IC of AMERICA with the obverse also in MDS; and Stage C in LDS (Late Die State) remains unconfirmed. The Stage B die gouges beneath the IC of AMERICA serve as the primary die-state marker for confirmed mid-life specimens. The Jefferson Nickel Return to Monticello design, introduced in 2006, features Jamie Franki's forward-facing Jefferson portrait on the obverse and a modified rendition of Felix Schlag's Monticello on the reverse. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 75% copper and 25% nickel composition, the coin weighs 5.0 grams at 21.2 mm diameter with a plain edge. Modern hubbing technology has reduced the frequency of doubled dies compared to earlier decades, but the 2019 date still produced multiple cataloged varieties — WDDR-005 being one of at least five — demonstrating that hub doubling continues to occur in current production. Collectors should focus first on the right central doorway roof area where the extra top line is most visible, then check beneath IC of AMERICA to assess die state.
