2019 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-004
Error
Description
VarietyVista's DDR-004 designation for the 2019 Jefferson Nickel identifies a medium spread directed Southeast, manifesting as an extra top to the left central doorway roof and post of Monticello, along with a slight extra bottom to the triangular pediment above the portico. The southeast spread indicates the secondary hub impression displaced downward and to the right, creating ghost images of these architectural elements offset in that compass direction. Die marker codes UVC-1868 and DMR-005 provide the formal VarietyVista classification identifiers for this die pair. Three provisional die stages document the die's working life: Stage A captures both obverse and reverse in Early Die State, representing the cleanest and sharpest impressions from this die pair before significant wear or fatigue marks accumulated. Stage B transitions to Mid Die State (unconfirmed), and Stage C reaches Late Die State (unconfirmed), where progressive deterioration may alter the doubling's visibility and introduce additional die cracks or surface irregularities. The Return to Monticello reverse — restored in 2006 after the four-year Westward Journey series — presents Felix Schlag's detailed rendering of Jefferson's Virginia home, and the architectural precision of the doorway, roof, and pediment elements makes them particularly sensitive indicators of hub misalignment. Even modest displacement generates recognizable secondary lines against the regular geometry of columns, lintels, and the triangular roofline. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 75% copper / 25% nickel composition at 5.0 grams, the 2019 Jefferson Nickel was produced in substantial quantity. Examination under 7x to 10x magnification of the left central doorway area will reveal the characteristic southeast-spread architectural doubling.
