Description

Exhibiting a very nice example of Class VIII tilted hub doubling, this 2019 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel DDR shows the doubling effect below the upper left portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello. Class VIII doubling occurs when the hub is tilted during die impression, creating a spread that varies in direction across different zones of the design. On Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse, the architectural elements of the center door frame and pediment provide precise reference lines where even minor tilt-induced displacement becomes measurable. Obverse die markers include a curved die gouge to the right of Jefferson's nose, while the reverse carries a small die gouge above the V of FIVE. These markers authenticate the specific die pair and help distinguish WDDR-007 from other 2019 Jefferson nickel doubled die reverses. The Monticello design, with its classical columns, doorways, and triangular pediment, has been a productive source of doubled die varieties since its introduction, and the door frame area above the steps is a favored diagnostic zone among nickel variety specialists.
