Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2018 1¢ WDDO-015 with no known reverse varieties, this Philadelphia Lincoln Shield cent shows a sloped extra thickness on LIBERTY where the upper left branch of the Y is noticeably thicker than the upper right branch. Extra vertical thickness also appears on the date, most visibly on the digit 2. On the obverse, die scratches run parallel to the right side of the right leg of the R in LIBERTY, and a die crack with a large chip sits above Lincoln's eye. The reverse carries its own markers: die chips appear at the top of the shield above the U and R of PLURIBUS along a die crack running the left side of the shield, and a die crack extends eastward then northward from the lower right side of the T in CENT. The asymmetric thickening on the Y of LIBERTY, where one branch is distinctly heavier than the other, provides a quick attribution point for cherry-pickers examining Shield cents from this date. Modern Lincoln cent doubled dies continue to attract variety collectors, and the die crack above Lincoln's eye adds dramatic visual interest to this specimen.
