Description

This is a doubled die reverse variety for the Frederick Douglass quarter. This WDDR-016, struck at the Philadelphia Mint and attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 2017-P 25c DC WDDR-016, documents yet another working die that received an imprecise hubbing during manufacture. The Frederick Douglass National Historic Site was D.C.'s sole representative in the ATB program, giving this quarter unique status as the only issue tied to the nation's capital. The reverse design's architectural rendering of Cedar Hill provides fine linear details particularly sensitive to even slight hub displacement during die preparation. Douglass purchased Cedar Hill in 1877, becoming the first African American resident of the Anacostia Heights neighborhood, and lived there until his death in 1895. For variety collectors, the mid-sequence position of WDDR-016 places it among varieties likely discovered during the peak examination period following the coin's release.
