Description

By the time WDDR-005 was cataloged, a pattern was emerging: the Frederick Douglass quarter was generating doubled die reverse varieties at an unusually high rate compared to other America the Beautiful issues. Frederick Douglass, born into slavery as Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey around 1818, escaped bondage in 1838. The reverse by Thomas Hipschen places Douglass at the writing desk where he composed editorials and correspondence that shaped American political discourse. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 2017-P 25c DC WDDR-005, this variety adds to growing evidence that specific production runs can generate clusters of hub misalignment events. Collectors assembling a complete set of Frederick Douglass DDRs face the challenge of distinguishing between varieties sharing the same design.
