Description

Cedar Hill, the Victorian home above the Anacostia River that Frederick Douglass purchased in 1877, anchors the background of this quarter's reverse — and a hub misalignment during die preparation produced the DDR characteristics cataloged as WDDR-002. Douglass lived at Cedar Hill for the final seventeen years of his life, and the property today forms the centerpiece of the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site. This 2017 Philadelphia Mint quarter variety is attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 2017-P 25c DC WDDR-002. The writing desk depicted in the foreground refers to Douglass's literary output, including three autobiographies and the newspaper The North Star. Each DDR variety represents a distinct die event — a separate working die that received a flawed hubbing — and the fact that over thirty such events were documented for one quarter design reflects both high die consumption and intensive collector examination.
