Description

2017-P DC WDDR-012 is a doubled die reverse on the 2017-P Frederick Douglass National Historic Site quarter (District of Columbia) in the America the Beautiful series, cataloged by the Wexler team. Slight doubling shows between the first and second windows on the house's right side, and slightly in the middle of the second window as well. Obverse Stage A has scratches running NE off QUARTER's last R and DOLLAR's D, and a gouge over LIBERTY's I. Stage B keeps those and adds gouges over the left side of QUARTER's E and over the P mint mark. On Stage C the Stage B scratches remain, the Stage B gouges may or may not show, and a small die chip lies left of the upper part of the J of the designer's initials. Reverse Stage A has two strong NE/SW scratches from Douglass's chin to the house's right side; a few strong NE/SW scratches over and through the designer's initials TRH; and many gouges through and under the doubled windows. Reverse Stage B is the same, and Stage C is probably the same, though the scratches through TRH may be weaker. George W. Powell, Jr. submitted the variety. Wexler lists no cross-references.
