Description

Magnification is the essential tool for identifying doubled die varieties on Roosevelt Dimes, where the denomination's small diameter means that even significant hub misalignment produces doubling measured in fractions of a millimeter. A standard 10x loupe can reveal many varieties, though some require 16x or 20x magnification for confident identification. WDDR-018 from the 2016 Philadelphia Mint is one of the later entries in that year's twenty-two-variety DDR catalog, and like all doubled die reverses, it originated during die manufacture when the working die received a secondary hub impression at a slight offset. The resulting die carried permanent doubled design elements that transferred to every coin it struck. On the reverse, the fine lines of the torch bands and the thin outlines of the olive and oak branch leaves serve as diagnostic areas where doubling is most readily detected. This variety was cataloged by the Wexler Team and recorded as Wexler Variety ID 2016-P 10¢ WDDR-018.
