Description
Opening the 2016 Philadelphia Mint Roosevelt Dime doubled die reverse catalog, WDDR-001 is the first of what would become an exceptionally well-documented year for this denomination. Doubled die reverses form when a working die receives a secondary hub impression at a slight positional offset, embedding permanent doubling into the die that transfers to every coin it strikes. On the Roosevelt Dime, the torch bands, flame contour, branch details, and surrounding lettering all serve as inspection areas where this doubling can be detected. The first variety cataloged for a given year often sets the baseline against which subsequent discoveries are compared. The Wexler Team documented this variety and assigned it Wexler Variety ID 2016-P 10¢ WDDR-001 as the initial entry in the 2016 dime DDR record.
