Description

Third spiked head documented for the 2016 Philadelphia Mint Roosevelt Dime, cataloged by Cuds on Coins with a documentation date of September 25, 2017. Spiked heads on Roosevelt Dimes are the same die crack found on Lincoln Cents and Kennedy Half Dollars, here on the ten-cent denomination. A crack opens in the obverse die bearing John R. Sinnock's portrait of Franklin D. Roosevelt and runs from the rim into the bust, producing a raised spike or protrusion from Roosevelt's profile on subsequent strikes. Roosevelt Dime spiked heads are less commonly documented than their Lincoln Cent counterparts, reflecting the dime's lower production volumes compared to cents. Three spiked heads from the 2016-P date represents a meaningful catalog count for the denomination, indicating that at least three obverse dies cracked this way during the year's production run. No additional cross-references beyond the Cuds on Coins catalog have been established. The 2016-P Roosevelt Dime was struck in copper-nickel clad composition, continuing the standard established by the Coinage Act of 1965 that eliminated silver from circulating dimes. The dime series has used Sinnock's obverse portrait continuously since 1946, making it the longest-running active obverse design in United States coinage and providing a consistent portrait geometry for spiked head researchers to study across seven decades of production.
