Description
Cataloged as SKH-10c-2016P-02, this spiked head variety appears on the 2016 Philadelphia-struck Roosevelt dime, part of the Roosevelt Dimes Clad and Silver Proof 1965 to Date series. Spiked head varieties occur when a die crack, die gouge, or retained die fragment creates a raised spike or protrusion extending from the head area of the coin's portrait, giving the president an unusual horn-like or antenna-like appendage. The copper-nickel clad dime weighs 2.268 grams and measures 17.91 mm in diameter (91.67% copper, 8.33% nickel bonded to a pure copper core). Documented by the Cuds on Coins reference project as of September 13, 2016, this variety carries no cross-references in other cataloging systems. The reverse die markers include a die crack between the letters T and A in STATES and another crack extending from the bottom of the torch into the field, indicating the reverse die was experiencing progressive structural deterioration during its service life. The combination of an obverse spiked head with reverse die cracking suggests this die pair was in an advanced state of fatigue when these specimens were struck. John R. Sinnock designed the Roosevelt dime obverse, introduced in 1946 to honor President Franklin D. Roosevelt's connection to the March of Dimes, and the reverse features a torch flanked by olive and oak branches symbolizing liberty, peace, and strength. Spiked head dimes are popular with error collectors because they are visually striking and can often be spotted without magnification, making them rewarding finds in pocket change and bank rolls.
