Description

Each year the Philadelphia Mint produces hundreds of millions of Roosevelt Dimes, requiring scores of working dies that are manufactured through the hubbing process. When any of these dies receives a misaligned secondary hub impression, the result is a doubled die — a permanent variety embedded in the die face. WDDR-008 from the 2016 production year is one such variety, representing the eighth distinct doubled die reverse cataloged for that year's Philadelphia Mint dime. The Roosevelt Dime's 17.9mm diameter and 2.268-gram weight make it the smallest and lightest circulating U.S. coin, which means that doubled die effects play out on a miniature scale. Details that might span a visible distance on a quarter or half dollar compress to fractions of a millimeter on the dime, demanding higher magnification for reliable detection. Despite this challenge, attributors have built extensive DDR catalogs for modern Roosevelt Dimes year after year. This variety was documented by the Wexler Team as Wexler Variety ID 2016-P 10¢ WDDR-008.
