Description

Die variety specialists approach each new year of Roosevelt Dime production as an opportunity to expand the catalog, searching through rolls and bags for previously unrecorded hub doubling. WDDR-003 for the 2016 Philadelphia Mint issue was identified through this systematic process. The working die that produced this variety received a secondary hub impression slightly offset from the first during the die sinking process at the Philadelphia Mint. Once embedded in the die, the doubling became a permanent feature that transferred to every coin struck before the die was retired. Roosevelt Dime reverses, designed by John R. Sinnock, feature a torch flanked by branches — a composition whose fine lines and curves make doubled impressions detectable under magnification. The 2016 year proved particularly rich in DDR varieties, with more than twenty distinct dies eventually cataloged, suggesting either a higher rate of hub misalignment or more thorough examination by attributors during this period. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 2016-P 10¢ WDDR-003.
