Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista as DDR-001 with UVC-803 and DMR-002, this 2016 Roosevelt Dime doubled die reverse displays a medium spread on the upper right central olive leaf in the lower right leaf cluster of the torch and olive branch design. The specific location — a single olive leaf in the lower right cluster — concentrates the diagnostic area for this variety into a small but precisely defined zone on the reverse. Three die stages are documented: Stage A in EDS (Early Die State) remains unconfirmed; Stage B in LDS (Late Die State) also remains unconfirmed; and Stage C in LDS shows a small die chip on the upper left flame with the obverse also in LDS. The Stage C die chip on the flame provides a useful die-state marker for specimens from the latter portion of this die's production life. The Roosevelt Dime was designed by John R. Sinnock, introduced in 1946 to honor President Franklin D. Roosevelt, with the obverse featuring Roosevelt's left-facing portrait and the reverse displaying a torch flanked by olive and oak branches symbolizing liberty, peace, and strength. The 2016 issue was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-nickel clad composition (outer layers of 75% copper and 25% nickel bonded to a pure copper core), weighing 2.268 grams at 17.91 mm diameter with a reeded edge. As DDR-001 for the 2016 date, this variety holds the primary position among cataloged reverse doubled dies, indicating it was the first documented and often the most significant doubled die reverse for this year. The small size of the Roosevelt Dime's reverse design means that even medium-spread doubling on the olive leaves requires careful examination under at least 10x magnification, with angled lighting to reveal the secondary leaf impression against the polished die surface.
