2016 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005

Description

Doubling along the upper left side of the frontiersman's right arm below the coat fringe identifies WDDR-005 on the 2016 Cumberland Gap (Kentucky) America the Beautiful Quarter. The Cumberland Gap reverse, designed by Frank Morris and sculpted by Joseph Menna, depicts a frontiersman gazing westward through the historic mountain pass that served as the primary route for westward migration in the late eighteenth century. Obverse die markers include a die scratch extending ESE from the bottom right of the P mintmark, while reverse markers show a small die gouge dot to the left of the frontiersman's lips and a small die gouge between the lower T and O in "TO." Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 2016-P 25¢ KY WDDR-005 with no other known attributions, this is the fifth doubled die reverse cataloged for the Cumberland Gap quarter. The frontiersman's detailed costume — with its fringed leather coat, powder horn, and frontier gear — provides numerous fine design lines where hub displacement becomes visible, and the arm area below the fringe where this doubling appears is an anatomical zone where the coat's leather folds create multiple parallel lines that amplify even subtle displacement. Attributed by the Wexler Team, WDDR-005 demonstrates the continued productivity of ATB quarter variety hunting in the program's seventh year.
