2016 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003

Description

Documented by the Wexler Team as WDDR-003, this 2016-P Cumberland Gap (Kentucky) America the Beautiful quarter displays a small extra piece of fringe below the fringe on the frontiersman's coat at the intersection of the upper right arm and the coat. The Cumberland Gap quarter, designed by Frank Morris, depicts a frontiersman gazing across the Cumberland Gap pass with the inscription honoring this historic gateway through the Appalachian Mountains. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, the copper-nickel clad quarter weighs 5.67 grams and measures 24.26 mm in diameter. Obverse die markers include a short vertical die gouge inside the upper left of the M in AMERICA and a small die gouge to the right of the bottom of the N in IN. The reverse carries a small die chip on the bottom of the T in THE. Cross-referenced with the Wexler Variety ID 2016-P 25c KY WDDR-003, this variety has no other known cross-references. The doubling on the frontiersman's coat fringe is a detail-specific manifestation where the hub doubling displaced only a small area of the design, creating a subtle but confirmed extra element. The America the Beautiful Quarters 2010-2021 program produced five different national park or site reverse designs annually across a dozen years, generating an enormous variety of working dies and consequently a rich field for doubled die discoveries. Each design's unique pictorial elements provide different areas where doubling can manifest, making each park quarter's variety population distinct.
