2016 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team as WDDR-002 for the 2016-P Cumberland Gap National Historical Park America the Beautiful Quarter, this variety shows the frontiersman's coat doubled to the left of the upper right arm where the background hill intersects the arm. No significant obverse die markers were noted, while the reverse carries two small die gouges: one just above the left side of the second O in DOORWAY, and another inside the upper R in DOORWAY. No cross-references to other attribution systems were identified, placing the Wexler catalog as the primary reference. The Cumberland Gap quarter honored the Kentucky national historical park, depicting frontiersman Daniel Boone approaching the natural passageway through the Appalachian Mountains that served as the primary route for westward migration in the late 18th century. The doubling on the coat detail near the arm-hill intersection represents a subtle variety that requires careful examination to detect, as the intersecting design elements create visual complexity that can mask or mimic doubling to untrained eyes. This is only the second DDR documented for the Cumberland Gap issue, making it a relatively early discovery in what may eventually become a longer catalog as more 2016 quarters are examined by variety specialists.
