Description

Featuring slight extra thickness running east to west on IN GOD WE TRUST, the 2016 WDDO-001 is a doubled die obverse variety on the Fort Moultrie quarter from South Carolina's national monument in the America the Beautiful series. The reverse depicts Sergeant William Jasper heroically raising the fort's flag during the 1776 British naval assault on Sullivan's Island, a pivotal early battle of the Revolutionary War. This variety is richly documented with die markers on both sides: the obverse shows a small die gouge below the left side of the O in DOLLAR, thin northwest-southeast die scratches below the ear, and thin northeast-southwest die scratches at the rim above STATES OF. The reverse carries a northeast-southwest die crack across Jasper's elbow, a die scratch extending north from the clouds left of the ships, and a north-south die scratch left of Jasper's right knee. Cataloged under Wexler designation 2016-P 25¢ SC WDDO-001, the abundance of die markers makes this variety particularly straightforward to authenticate.
