Description

Fort Moultrie's palmetto-log fortification on Sullivan's Island withstood a British naval bombardment on June 28, 1776 — one of the first decisive American victories of the Revolutionary War — and the fort's silhouette appears on this 2016 ATB Quarter, which carries a doubled die reverse cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 2016-P 25¢ SC WDDR-001. WDDR-001 is an entry in the Wexler catalog for reverse doubling on this South Carolina quarter. The reverse, designed by Richard Scott and sculpted by Joseph Menna, depicts Sergeant William Jasper returning the crescent-marked regimental flag to the fort's ramparts. Doubled die reverse varieties on ATB quarters affect the unique commemorative reverse rather than the shared Washington obverse. The ATB program ran from 2010 through 2021 and produced 56 designs honoring national parks and sites across all states and territories.
