Description

Eighth cataloged doubled die reverse for a 2015 America the Beautiful Quarter, DDR-008 exhibits medium spread in the southwest direction visible as extra blades of grass in the reverse design. VarietyVista assigned die markers UVC-2264 and DMR-009, documenting three die stages: Stage A with both reverse and obverse in Early Die State (EDS), Stage B in MDS (unconfirmed), and Stage C in LDS (unconfirmed). The southwest spread direction means the secondary hub image is displaced both downward and to the left relative to the primary design, contrasting with the southeast spread documented on DDR-009 for the same year. This directional difference confirms these are distinct die varieties produced from different hubs or different hubbing events, not variations of the same doubled die. Medium spread indicates the doubling is visible under standard magnification but typically not discernible to the unaided eye. The ATB quarters program's nature-themed designs frequently depict vegetation — grasses, trees, and natural landscapes — that serve as highly sensitive indicators of hub doubling due to their fine parallel lines and detailed textures. Each of the five 2015 ATB designs offered different reverse elements where doubling could manifest, and the grass blade doubling on DDR-008 connects this variety to one of the designs featuring prominent botanical detail.
