Description

Fifth documented doubled die reverse for a 2015 America the Beautiful Quarter, DDR-005 displays strong spread in the southwest direction visible as extra blades of grass. VarietyVista assigned die markers UVC-2234 and DMR-006, with three die stages: Stage A in EDS (unconfirmed), Stage B in MDS (unconfirmed), and Stage C where both the reverse and obverse reach Late Die State (LDS). The "strong spread Southwest" classification marks this as one of the more prominent doubled die reverses among the 2015 ATB quarter varieties — strong spread is the highest intensity category, indicating doubling that may be visible under low magnification or even to a practiced unaided eye. The southwest spread direction means the secondary hub image was displaced both downward and to the left. The progression through all three die stages to LDS indicates this die was used extensively, and the grass blade doubling would have been present on every coin struck from this die throughout its entire service life. The ATB quarters program honored five national sites per year, and the 2015 designs featuring natural landscapes with vegetation provided abundant fine detail where hub doubling becomes apparent. Strong spread on grass blades is particularly diagnostic because the parallel lines of individual blades multiply the visual effect of any misalignment, making even modest hub shifts clearly visible.
