Description

Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 2015-P 25¢ DE WDDR-027 and cross-referenced as CONECA 10-R-VIII, this Philadelphia-struck Bombay Hook National Park quarter exhibits strong reverse doubling below the right end of the upper grass strip between the great egret and the great blue heron in the wildlife refuge scene. Two obverse stages have been identified. In Stage A, die gouges appear near the rim above the L in LIBERTY, left of the bottom of the E in QUARTER, left of the first T in STATES, and on the knot of the queue. By Stage B, the gouges left of the E and above the L persist, but other Stage A markers have been abraded away through die maintenance. On the reverse, Stage A shows a die gouge in the field above the heron's eye, and by Stage B that marker persists while a die chip has developed on the heron's beak. The Bombay Hook design's detailed wetland scene provides ample surface area for doubled die effects, and the grass strip doubling on WDDR-027 occupies a visually rich zone of the composition where egret and heron figures converge.
