2015 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001
ErrorDescription
As the first cataloged doubled die reverse for the 2015-P Blue Ridge Parkway National Park Quarter, Wexler Variety ID 2015-P 25¢ NC WDDR-001 holds the primary position in the doubled die census for this issue within the America the Beautiful Quarters program. The Blue Ridge Parkway Quarter, designed by Frank Morris, depicts a motorcyclist cruising along the scenic roadway with the sweeping vista of the Appalachian Mountains in the background — a design featuring both mechanical elements (the motorcycle) and natural landscape that provides a diverse set of reference points for identifying hub doubling. The DDR classification indicates the hubbing misalignment occurred during the die manufacturing process when the hub impressed its design into the working die at least twice with a slight offset between impressions, creating doubled impressions that would transfer to every coin struck from that die until it was retired from service. As WDDR-001 for North Carolina's Blue Ridge Parkway issue, this variety was likely among the earliest doubled die discoveries reported on the design, earning the first position in the sequential Wexler numbering system. The 2015-P quarter was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-nickel clad composition (91.67% copper / 8.33% nickel outer layers bonded to a pure copper core) at 5.67 grams. The America the Beautiful program, spanning 2010 through 2021, produced five new reverse designs annually, each representing a national site from one of the 50 states, districts, or territories — and the rapid turnover of designs meant each reverse saw limited die production compared to standard circulating designs, potentially concentrating doubled die varieties into smaller populations of surviving specimens.
