Description

Strong spread directed north produces an extra lower right opening in the handle of the sword on this 2015 Saratoga National Historical Park quarter doubled die reverse. The Saratoga quarter depicts a soldier at the moment of surrender, offering his sword in a scene drawn from the 1777 British defeat that became a turning point in the American Revolution. The sword handle, with its curved guard and grip details, is where the northward hub displacement created a clearly doubled opening visible under moderate magnification. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A in Early Die State and Stage B in Mid-Die State remain unconfirmed, while Stage C records both the reverse and obverse in Late Die State. The confirmed Late Die State observation indicates the known specimens were struck later in the die pair's production run. Attributed by VarietyVista. America the Beautiful quarters, with their annually changing reverse designs, generated one-year-only variety opportunities that made each new design a fresh canvas for doubled die discoveries.
