Description

Discovered by Vivien Bullard, this 2014 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Shield Cent trail die reverse is documented at a mid-die state on both sides, with a particularly prominent obverse die marker: a rather large die dent just to the left of the date. Trail die varieties occur when a die carries faint residual impressions from a prior manufacturing step, producing subtle ghost traces on struck coins. The Shield Cent design, introduced in 2010 as the permanent successor to the four 2009 bicentennial reverses, features a union shield motif by Lyndall Bass symbolizing Lincoln's preservation of the nation. No reverse die markers have been noted, making the large obverse die dent the primary diagnostic for this die pair. The die dent's position next to the date is advantageous for collectors, as the date area is among the most frequently examined portions of any coin. This is the eighth trail die reverse documented for the 2014-P cent, indicating that trail die occurrences were not uncommon during Shield Cent production.
