2014P-1DER-002T Trail Die Reverse

Description

Found by Joe Koelling on the 2014 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Shield Cent, this trail die reverse variety exhibits offset trail impressions from a shifted reverse die. In Stage C (LDS), the obverse shows an inverted Y-shaped die crack running through the word WE and into Lincoln's head. The reverse, also in LDS, displays two die chips in the upper left edge of the shield. Late die state specimens of trail die varieties are notable because the progressive deterioration of the die adds secondary diagnostics, such as die cracks and chips, that help confirm attribution even as the original trail impressions may weaken. Struck on copper-plated zinc planchets at Philadelphia, the 2014 Lincoln Shield Cent continues the union shield reverse introduced in 2010. The combination of trail die impressions with late die state cracking on this variety offers collectors a study in how multiple forms of die failure can coexist on a single coin.
