2014P-1DEO-008T Trail Die Obverse
Error
Description
Discovered by Daniel Messano, this 2014 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Shield Cent trail die obverse is documented at Stage B in mid-die state. The obverse carries no specifically noted die markers at this stage, while the reverse displays two distinct die cracks: one entering the field from the apex of the shield and another with an accompanying die chip along the left top edge of the shield. The absence of noted obverse die markers at mid-die state is itself a diagnostic feature, distinguishing this die from others that may share similar trail die characteristics but carry different surface anomalies. Trail die obverse varieties on Lincoln Cents capture displaced impressions of obverse design elements — portions of Lincoln's portrait, the date, or legend text that appear as faint extra images offset from their normal positions due to abnormal hub contact during die preparation. Struck in copper-plated zinc, the 2014 Shield Cent continued the design introduced four years earlier. Trail Dies attribution. The reverse die cracks provide strong secondary confirmation when attributing this variety.
