Description

Discovered by Joe Koelling, the 2014P-1DEO-004T is a trail die obverse variety found on Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Shield Cents. Trail die obverse varieties preserve vestiges of a previous hub impression on the working die, producing faint secondary design traces on finished coins. Documented at Stage B, the obverse is at mid-die-state with a die crack visible in Lincoln's head below the word WE. The reverse is also at MDS, carrying a die chip in the upper left edge of the shield. These markers on Lincoln's head and the shield provide two independent diagnostic points positioned on the most prominent design elements of the obverse and reverse, respectively, allowing collectors to confirm the variety from either side of the coin without requiring high magnification.

Die Markers

  • Stage “B“, obverse is MDS – a die crack is seen in Lincoln’s head below the word WE.
  • Reverse is MDS – a die chip is seen in the upper left edge of the shield.
