2014-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001
ErrorDescription
First cataloged doubled die obverse for the 2014 Denver Mint Lincoln Shield Cent, WDDO-001 shows doubling on the bottom left side of the lower ear — a design element on Lincoln's portrait where even subtle hub displacement becomes visible due to the ear's curved relief and proximity to a flat field. On the obverse, a light die scratch runs southwest-northeast below the TY in LIBERTY, providing a secondary attribution marker. On the reverse, a die crack runs along the top of the left side of the shield, documenting progressive die stress on the Union Shield design introduced in 2010. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 2014-D 1' WDDO-001, this designation establishes it as the first recognized DDO for the date and mint combination. The Lincoln Shield Cent series was still in its early years by 2014, and doubled die documentation was actively building the foundation catalog that would guide future collectors. Denver's substantial cent production employed numerous die pairs, and the mechanical demands of high-speed striking occasionally produced the slight hub-to-die misalignment that creates doubled die varieties.
