Description
This cud for the 2014 Denver Mint Lincoln Shield Cent records a die rim failure on a modern zinc-core cent bearing Lyndall Bass's Union Shield reverse introduced in 2010. A cud forms when a section of the die rim fractures and the broken fragment separates entirely, leaving a cavity that fills with metal during striking to produce a raised featureless mass at the coin's edge. The CU-1C-2014D-01 catalog designation follows the Cuds on Coins system: CU for cud, 1C for one-cent denomination, and 2014D for the date and Denver mint mark. Denver struck hundreds of millions of Shield Cents in 2014, employing numerous obverse and reverse die pairs across extended production runs. The mechanical stresses of high-speed striking — repeated impacts at pressures sufficient to flow metal into every design detail — gradually weaken the die rim until fractures initiate at stress concentration points. Shield Cent cuds provide collectors with examples of this die failure type on a modern denomination.
