2013 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003
Error
Description
Visible as extra thickness on the designer's initials LB and distortion on the incuse letters of E PLURIBUS UNUM, this doubled die reverse on the 2013 Lincoln Shield Cent targets two of the reverse's most distinctive design elements. The LB initials belong to Lyndall Bass, whose union shield design was adopted for the cent reverse beginning in 2010, while E PLURIBUS UNUM appears in incuse lettering across the shield's horizontal bars — an unusual treatment that makes doubling on these letters particularly distinctive. Attributed by the Wexler Team, the variety carries the cross-reference Wexler Variety ID: 2013 1¢ WDDR-003. No significant obverse die markers are recorded, but the reverse offers clear diagnostics: a die gouge sits to the left of the lower E in the incuse EPU legend, accompanied by a die scratch running northwest to southeast above the same E. These markers help confirm attribution among the multiple doubled die reverses cataloged for this date. Modern cent varieties like this one demonstrate that hub doubling continues to occur even with contemporary die production technology at the Philadelphia Mint.
