2013 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-010

Description

Exhibiting Class VIII tilted hub doubling, the 2013 WDDR-010 Jefferson Nickel shows the effect below the upper portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse — the iconic depiction of Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate that returned to the nickel in 2006 after the Westward Journey series. Class VIII doubling results from a hub tilted during impression into the working die, producing a pivoted distortion that affects design elements unevenly based on their distance from the tilt axis. Three die markers assist attribution: an obverse die gouge above the first T of TRUST, two die gouges below the hair at the back of Jefferson's shoulder, and a reverse die gouge to the lower left of the F in FIVE. Philadelphia struck this copper-nickel issue, continuing the tradition of applying the P mintmark to Jefferson Nickels that began in 1980. The tenth documented doubled die reverse for the 2013 Philadelphia nickel reflects sustained variety research on modern Jefferson issues.
