2013 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-009
ErrorDescription
Employing Class VIII Tilted Hub doubling — one of the less commonly encountered doubling mechanisms — this 2013 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel shows the effect below the upper portion of the door frame on Monticello's center door, above the steps. Class VIII doubling occurs when the hub is tilted relative to the die during impression, creating displacement that varies across the die face depending on distance and direction from the tilt axis. The center door, with its architectural lines and defined frame, provides a clear reference grid against which the tilted doubling can be measured. Reverse die markers aid attribution: a slanted die crack extends from the upper right corner of the porch roof, and two small die dots sit above the I of MONTICELLO. The obverse carries no noted die markers. Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse, depicting Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate, has served as the standard Jefferson Nickel reverse since 1938, and its architectural detail creates numerous locations where hub doubling can manifest. WDDR-009's tilted hub origin distinguishes it from the more common Class II and Class V doublings dominating Jefferson variety listings.
