2013 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-007

Description

Displaying Class VIII Tilted Hub doubling below the upper left portion of Monticello's center door frame, WDDR-007 is a doubled die reverse on the 2013-P Jefferson Nickel attributed by the Wexler Team. The tilted hub mechanism produces doubling emanating from a pivot point created when the hub contacts the die face at a slight angle, generating displacement that varies in magnitude depending on distance from the tilt axis. On this variety, the doubling concentrates beneath the upper left section of the door frame, where the recessed architectural lines provide high contrast for detecting secondary impressions. Reverse die markers include a die dot below the M of UNUM and a die gouge to the right of the long left window, while the obverse shows no noted markers. The 2013-P nickel was produced at Philadelphia in the standard copper-nickel alloy. Jefferson Nickel doubled die reverses focused on the Monticello facade form a growing subset within the series, and the recurring appearance of Class VIII tilted hub varieties in the door frame region suggests this architectural element is particularly sensitive to minor hub misalignments.
