Description
Trails stand up off the upper ends of LIBERTY's letters on 2012P-1DEO-024T, pointing at 000°, due north toward the rim. Its number, decoded, is 2012 Philadelphia (2012P), cent (1), design extended on the obverse (DEO), file 024, trails (T). The obverse of its middle-state coin has a forehead crack; a reverse crack is just starting above the PLU of PLURIBUS. Joe Koelling found the die. With no date trails and a straight-up bearing, it differs from 2012-1DEO-004T, which also has a line from the 1 of the date. Trails are generally explained as the result of polishing the die with a rotary buff; some attribute them to the die moving against the hub.
Die Markers
- Stage “B“, obverse is MDS – a die crack is seen in Lincoln’s forehead.
- Reverse is MDS – a die crack is beginning to form above the letters PLU of PLURIBUS
