Description

Catalogued by Trail Dies, 2012P-1DEO-012T is a trail die obverse variety on the 2012-P Lincoln Shield Cent, documented across at least two stages. Stage B, found by Joe Koelling, documents the obverse in middle die state. Stage C, found by Jacob Hines, documents the obverse in late die state. Two separate finders for distinct stages reflect the community-based nature of trail die attribution, where collectors tracking the same die contribute stage-specific documentation to the overall record. Trail die errors occur when an obverse die delivers a faint secondary impression of a design not belonging to the target denomination or type, leaving ghost-like transferred elements across the field. The Lincoln Shield Cent reverse, introduced in 2010, features a Union shield and E PLURIBUS UNUM, providing a clean surface against which trail impressions can be examined.
