Description

Discovered by Albert Neils Sr., this 2012 Philadelphia Lincoln Shield Cent exhibits a trail die obverse variety. Die markers: Stage B, obverse is MDS — a die scratch from D of GOD to T of TRUST. Reverse is MDS — a die crack with die chips along top left edge of shield; dimples under the peripheral letters. The dimple pattern beneath peripheral lettering is unusual, potentially from repeated contact stress at the die's outer edge or from the feed finger mechanism. The Lincoln Shield Cent debuted in 2010 with Lyndall Bass's union shield reverse replacing the Memorial design. Struck at Philadelphia in copper-plated zinc (2.5 g, 19.05 mm), the shield's bold geometric lines and prominent banner inscription provide clear reference features for detecting trail die displacement on this modern issue.
