Description
2012P-1DEO-005T has trails from Lincoln's portrait itself, off the nose and lips, as well as from the first 2 of the date and the ST in TRUST. All run at 100°, slightly south of east. The TrailDies number: 2012 and P, date and mint; 1, the denomination; DEO, design extension on the obverse; 005, the file; T, trails. On the late-die-state coin, a gouge sits just over the Y's left arm in LIBERTY and a smaller one above the last 2 of the date; the reverse has a crack along the shield's top left edge. Albert Niles Sr. found the die. Trails are generally attributed to polishing the die with a rotary buff, though some attribute them to the die moving against the hub.
Die Markers
- Stage “C“, obverse is LDS – a die gouge is seen just above the left arm of the Y in LIBERTY. Another smaller die gouge is seen above the last 2 digit in the date.
- Reverse is LDS – a die crack is seen along the left top edge of the shield.
