Description

Discovered by Albert Niles Sr., this 2012 Philadelphia Lincoln Shield Cent is a trail die obverse — with the design transfer anomaly on the obverse rather than the more commonly documented reverse. At Stage “C” (LDS), the obverse shows a die gouge above the Y in LIBERTY and a smaller gouge above the last 2 in the date. The reverse at LDS features a die crack along the left top edge of Lyndall Bass's Union Shield design that debuted in 2010. Composed of copper-plated zinc weighing 2.5 grams at 19.05 mm diameter. Trail die obverse varieties receive the DEO catalog designation (Die Extension Obverse) to distinguish them from DER (Die Extension Reverse), and they are generally scarcer in the cataloged population than their reverse counterparts among Lincoln Cent trail die listings.

Die Markers

• Stage “C“, obverse is LDS – a die gouge is seen just above the left arm of the Y in LIBERTY. Another smaller die gouge is seen above the last 2 digit in the date.
• Reverse is LDS – a die crack is seen along the left top edge of the shield.
