2012 (P) Lincoln Shield Cent - P-1DEO-003T Trail Die Obverse

Description

Light trails drop from the 01 in the date and the bottoms of RTY in LIBERTY on 2012P-1DEO-003T, running at 170°, a little east of due south. The TrailDies number is 2012P (date, Philadelphia), 1 (cent), DEO (obverse design extension), 003 (file) and T (trails). TrailDies' example is a late-state coin; nothing is noted on the obverse, but the reverse has die chips and cracks along the upper edge of the shield. No finder is named for this die. The 170° bearing and the late cracks on the shield separate it from 001T and 002T, whose lines run at 180°. Trails are usually blamed on polishing of the die with a rotary tool, though some attribute them to the die moving against the hub.
