2011P-10DER-001T Trail Die Reverse

Description

Discovered by Alex Helzel, this 2011 Philadelphia Mint Roosevelt Dime carries four distinct sets of trail die impressions affecting much of the reverse — an unusually complex specimen with trails at four different offset directions. The first set at 055 degrees impacts DIME, the oak leaf stem, and UNUM. A second set at 155 degrees affects URIBUS, the olive stem, and the E from ONE. At 270 degrees, trails appear on the torch and portions of AMERICA and the D of DIME. The fourth set at 288 degrees shows on TES of STATES. Trail dies occur when a die receives a secondary, misaligned impression during the manufacturing process, leaving faint ghost images of design elements alongside the primary design. Having four separate offset directions on a single die is exceptional — most trail dies exhibit one or two directions at most. Die stage B shows the obverse at mid-die-state with no noted markers, and the reverse similarly at mid-die-state without confirmed markers. Cataloged as 2011P-10DER-001T by Trail Dies, this is the first documented trail die reverse for the 2011 Philadelphia Roosevelt Dime.
